About Random Encounters
Life on Bonaire is full of surprises. As you walk the streets, work your shift, or tend your kunuku, random encounters can appear at any moment — a neighbor asking for help, a police permit check, a stranger with a risky offer, or a donkey standing stubbornly in the road. Each encounter presents choices, and each choice has consequences.
Encounters appear as dialogue cards with 3–4 response options. Each response has tags (gain, loss, fame, shame, police, medical, time, risk) that hint at the outcome. Some responses cost money, others cost time, and some shift your reputation axes. Read the hints carefully — they tell you what is at stake.
Encounters come in three forms. 'Choice Cards' are the standard dialogue with multiple responses. 'Story' encounters play out as a sequence of events. 'Chat' encounters are lighter — quick flavor interactions that build atmosphere without major consequences.
Outcome Tags
Each response tag tells you what kind of outcome to expect. 'Gain' means you earn something (money, items). 'Loss' means you pay or lose something. 'Fame' boosts your reputation. 'Shame' hurts it. 'Police' involves the authorities. 'Medical' affects your health or energy. 'Time' costs you hours. 'Risk' means the outcome is uncertain.
Encounters are triggered by NPCs, locations, and events. Walking into certain areas may trigger a location encounter. Interacting with specific NPCs may trigger their personal story. World events (droughts, festivals, power outages) can spawn island-wide encounter waves.

Outcome Tag Distribution
Tips for Handling Encounters
- Carry some cash — many encounters require money to take the best option.
- Keep your energy up — low energy limits your encounter choices.
- Know your NPCs — the same encounter plays differently depending on who you are dealing with.
- Bribes are risky — KPCN officers may take your money and still write the ticket.
- Being polite costs nothing — the 'respectful' option usually avoids the worst outcomes.
- Your reputation matters — some encounter options only appear if you have enough fame or bario standing.
